Scene E2:3
EXT. THE VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, WOODSIDE, CA - AFTERNOON (MILLENNIUM)
Mitch and Lauren are walking hand in hand across the extensive lawn behind the Van Bureen residence in Woodside. They are approaching Mitch’s mother, KATARINA (55) who’s trimming her rosebushes in her rose garden, located between the tennis court and the guest house. Katarina is wearing a wide brim hat and she stops her pruning when she sees them approach her, tosses some branches in a basket and removes her gardening gloves. She waits for Mitch and Lauren to reach her.
MITCH
Hi mamma!
(Giving his mother a peck on the cheek)
This is Lauren.
LAUREN
(extending her hand, smiling)
Hi! It’s great to meet you!
KATARINA
(Offering a ”dead fish” handshake)
Likewise. A bit of a surprise, you were.(Looking at Mitch)
KATARINA (CONT'D)
My youngest son doesn’t grace us with his presence very often these days. He may as well be living half way across the world for all that I know...
LAUREN
This is an amazing place you have
here! And all these roses...
Katarina smiles for the first time.
KATARINA
Yes. I’ve spent many years on this garden...
(Looking at it)
And I am reaping, finally, as it seems...
MITCH
Is Pete home?
(Nodding towards the guest house)
KATARINA
No. He’s at the Medical Center.
(Turning to Lauren)
Mitchell’s brother is in his second year of residency at the Cardiology Department.
LAUREN
(Smiling politely)
So I heard.
There’s a brief moment of silence before Katarina motions towards the big veranda at the back of the main house and says;
KATARINA
I asked Dalisa to prepare afternoon
tea. It should be ready for us...
Katarina takes the lead and they all walk up to the house.
JUMP CUT TO:
VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, VERANDA - MOMENTS LATER.
Katarina leans back in her rattan chair and watches her maid DALISA pour tea for her, Mitch and Lauren. She notices Lauren’s slight unease and wide eyed expression. The maid leaves them and Katatina urges Lauren to help herself to the treats on the cake stand.
KATARINA
These are our family specialties. I
suggest you start with a Swedish
Skagen sandwich, and then try a
Dutch cherry tart.
When Lauren hesitates for a second Mitch just quickly grabs her plate and serves her a sandwich and a tart and then serves himself. He’s eating before she even touches her fork.
MITCH
(in between bites)
It’s kinda like a lobster roll. You’ll like it.
Lauren takes a bite and nods.
Katarina just sips her tea and studies her.
KATARINA
So, what I’ve gathered from the scarce information provided,
(Shooting Mitch a glance)
You have been seeing each other for
awhile...?
Lauren hesitates and opens her mouth to respond when Mitch says;
MITCH
We’re living together.
Katarina doesn’t really seem to register what he’s saying, she keeps her eyes on Lauren.
KATARINA
You’re still an undergraduate Lauren?
LAUREN
Yes. Sophomore. English major.
KATARINA
Aiming for....?
LAUREN
(With slight confusion)
Eh..I wanna be a writer.
Katarina nods slowly, her face showing slight pity and disdain.
KATARINA
Mitchell tells me you’re from Seattle?
Lauren nods dutifully with her mouth full.
KATARINA
What does your parents do?
Lauren can see in the corner of her eye that Mitch is tensing up before she answers.
LAUREN
My mother recently passed. She was
a teacher.
(Lauren looks down and swallows)
KATARINA
(Off guard)
Oh. I’m so sorry dear...
LAUREN
(Passionate, proud)
She worked with disadvantaged high
school kids, like, she often tutored
groups with teenage girls who were
either pregnant or had a baby, to help them with their SAT’s and college applications...
KATARINA
(Interrupting)
And your father?
LAUREN
(Proudly)
He’s an Associate Professor at UW,
teaching Political Science, like political theory, methodology...
KATARINA
(Interrupting)
A family of scholars.
LAUREN
(Enthusiastically)
Yes...my parents are first generation graduates! My grandfather was an industrial welder and...
Katarina’s eyes divert from Lauren as she sees the maid hovering by the entrance.
KATARINA
(To Dalisa)
Please bring us some sparkling water Dalisa.
(Turning back to Mitch and Lauren)
It was 85 degrees this morning, I wonder how hot it is now?
(Looking at Mitch)
I spoke to Douglas yesterday. He’s
quite certain he’ll be able to secure an internship for you in Stockholm after you’ve completed those strategy courses in London...
MITCH
(Interrupting)
Mamma, I’m not gonna...
KATARINA
Mitchell! Douglas is bending over
backwards to get you in! Do you have any idea how many candidates they have for their internships? Hundreds! Most of them with higher merits than you. Financial planning is a stable career path, unlike those completely unrealistic student ventures that you’re
prepared to invest in! Unpaid work for some juvenile reverie that will inevitably deflate like the rest of these so called ”start-ups” around here. What was that ridiculous name again? Goggles?! Mitchell, this is your chance. This is a career and not a school project.
MITCH
It’s ”Google”. And I’m not going to
work there. I’m not going to London. And I’m certainly not going to Stockholm.
Katarina stares at him, her look demanding an explanation. Lauren looks worried and shoots sideways glances at Mitch who seems to be bracing himself.
MITCH
Lauren’s pregnant. We’re expecting a child in late January.
Katarina’s face falls. For the first time since Lauren arrived, Katarina's expression shows emotion, but it certainly isn’t happiness. It’s a mix of shock, grief, annoyance and vulnerability. Katarina’s mouth is firmly shut but her eyes flinch.
KATARINA
(As if she’s talking to herself)
Where’s the water? Sometimes it’s like she doesn’t hear me. I think she may be going deaf.
(Rising up from her chair)
Mitchell. Come with me.
Katarina walks into the house and Mitch follows her. Lauren is left by herself looking insecure and a bit shaken. She moves her fork around the plate but puts it down, glancing nervously at the door where Mitch has just disappeared.
JUMP CUT TO:
INT. THE VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, WOODSIDE, CA - INSIDE - AFTERNOON (MILLENNIUM)
Katarina closes the door to the study and looks at Mitch with a grave expression.
MITCH
It’s a shock. I know.
KATARINA
(Giving up a short, hard laugh)
I’m sure it is to you. I wish I could say the same. I think this is a rather predictable consequence of your modus operandi Mitchell. You were always so easily led astray, and so haphazard in your choice of company. She’s a pretty girl, but obviously completely naive and wishy-washy. And now she wants to marry into our family, well that’s not going to happen the way she’s imagining it...
MITCH
No one’s talking about marriage!
And sure, she’s naive but not in the way you think she is, as a matter of fact, you have no idea of how her mind works...
KATARINA
Well that’s for you to deal with now. You’ve put yourself in this situation and no one but yourself can take responsibility...
MITCH
I am! I’m staying with her! I’m not going to to London, I’m...
KATARINA
(Interrupting)
You’ll have to do more than just
”stay with her” Mitchell. You will have to provide for her. For you.
Cause no one else will. Is that clear?
Mitch stares at his mother, eyes slightly narrowed.
MITCH
What exactly are you saying here?
Katarina holds his gaze, silently. She looks calm, but Mitch notices her chest heaving more than normally, then she says;
KATARINA
(Cooly, matter-of-factly)
Your fall-tuition has been paid. But from now on, you’re on your own
Mitchell.
Mitch looks at his mother with ice-cold contempt, then he quickly marches out of the room.
JUMP CUT TO:
I/E. MITCH VAN BUREEN’S CAR - MOMENTS LATER (MILLENNIUM)
Mitch and Lauren are getting into Mitch’s car. They both shut the doors and Mitch starts the car and puts it in drive. Lauren looks upset and shaken. Mitch just looks very pissed off. The gates open and they drive through them and away from his family home, fast.
LAUREN
What happened here Mitch? Please
talk to me...
MITCH
She decided to cut me off. That’s what happened.
LAUREN
Cut you off? Like...how?
MITCH
Like zero financial support.
(Hitting the wheel with his hand)
Bitch!!!
Lauren covers her face with her hands.
LAUREN
Oh my God...
MITCH
I wasn’t expecting her to be overjoyed, but this...
(Hitting the wheel again)
Fuck this!!!
LAUREN
I think she just needs to process this, I think she needs time...
MITCH
(Interrupting)
You don’t know her. You have no idea. It’s like she’s been waiting for this. Now she can punish me for not following her plan...
Lauren is quiet, but looks devastated.
LAUREN
I have REALLY ruined your life haven’t I...?
Mitch is quiet but shakes his head a little.
MITCH
We’ll be OK. Somehow.
LAUREN
(Smiling, looking both scared and hopeful)
I know we will.
(Seeking his eyes, with conviction)
I’ll make sure we’ll be OK.
Lauren puts her hand on Mitch’s hand resting on the transmission. Mitch keeps his eyes on the road.

Scene E2:4
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM, LAWYERS OFFICE AND PARKING GARAGE,
DOWNTOWN LA - LATE AFTERNOON (PRESENT DAY)
Mitch and Lauren are seated opposite each other at a large conference table and their respective legal representatives are seated beside them. There are piles of documents on the table and the four parties are just mechanically passing the documents between them, Lauren’s lawyer checks one document, passes it to Lauren who signs, passes it to Mitch’s lawyer who checks, then passes it to Mitch who signs, and passes it back to Lauren’s lawyer, and so forth. Finally all the
documents are signed and collected by Lauren’s lawyer. All four parties kind of exhale and sit up straight when Lauren’s lawyer speaks;
FEMALE LAWYER
So there we are. We have a complete
MSA that will be submitted and filed first thing Monday morning.
I’d just like to say, as a concluding remark here, that I wish all of my cases were this efficient and...pleasant.
MALE LAWYER
(smiling)
I concur with this statement. I wish all of my cases were joint uncontested petitions like this. I have no doubt, even with the minor outstanding issues, that the divorce decree will be attained
within the minimum period. I wish you both all the best. And a very nice weekend.
All four parties rise from their seats and shake hands (apart from Mitch and Lauren). Mitch and Lauren exit the offices together and get into the elevator. After a few seconds of silence Mitch speaks;
MITCH
So I guess we’re ”model divorcees” huh? We got top grades...
LAUREN
You and I both know why this is. I have made NUMEROUS concessions that
I was advised not to make. Not to
mention the amount of time I’ve spent these last weeks to facilitate this! Like day and night! When I should have been writing!
MITCH
You’re getting a generous six month
alimony!
LAUREN
Ha!! I can’t believe you just said that!!! (Fired up) Did I hear you correctly?! A six month fucki’n alimony! To make up for a career down the drain?!?
MITCH
Did they let you go?
LAUREN
Not yet.
The elevator doors stops at the garage level. Mitch and Lauren both step outside as the elevator doors slide open and they almost collide. They glare at each other and both continue to walk towards their cars.
MITCH
(Stopping, looking at Lauren)
We could have waited to do all this until after your deadline or whatever...
LAUREN
No Mitch!!! I can’t wait another decade! Another year! I can’t wait another hour! Enough of the waiting!
MITCH
It’s not all about you Lauren! Or me! It’s not fair for Aidan to get caught up in all of this, right before his finals...
LAUREN
Are you worried about HIM? Or his
grades?! You think he’d feel better if we’d postpone the divorce, for his sake? I think not.
MITCH
Well you always had the precedence
in knowing what’s best for Aidan...
LAUREN
(Interrupting)
Ohhh!
I’ll give you a hint what’s ”best for Aidan”! It’s not having to find out that his father is FUCKING some girl on the side and then having to tell his mother about it!
Lauren and Mitch realize their lawyers are coming out from the elevator. The lawyers pass them both, flashing them a stiff smile and a nod, and they exchange a glance with each other as in saying; *Classic. So much for acting civil*.
Both Lauren and Mitch look down at the ground.
MITCH
(As the lawyers are out of earshot)
Once again. I’ve wronged you. But it’s not right for you to make him feel like he has to side with you...
LAUREN
This is your ASSUMPTION?! That I’m
vilifying you?! You just keep on
INSULTING me Mitch! You have NO
IDEA! What makes you think I’ve tried to make him side with me huh?!
MITCH
He’s avoiding me. And today I wanted to talk to him and he just took off...
LAUREN
You want him to talk to you now, today, when you’ve made a time slot for it. That’s not how it works.
Now it’s your turn to do the waiting. He’ll be back sooner or later, and you better be there waiting, when he comes.
Lauren turns to continue towards her car. Mitch remains still, watching her. She holds out her key and her car lights flash. Mitch turns to walk towards his car, looking a little defeated.

Scene E2:5
I/E. ATRIUM DINING AREA, L’ANGOLO RESTAURANT - LATER
Josh is clearing the empty dinner plates from Lauren and her friends asking them if they enjoyed their food.
CHRIS CHEN
(Looking straight at Josh)
You’re an actor right?
JOSH
(Smiling politely)
I’m not.
CHRIS CHEN
A model?
JOSH
(Smiling, patiently)
No. I’m a waiter.
CHRIS CHEN
I don’t believe you!
Chris leans in towards Liz and "whispers", in perfectly audible to everyone;
CHRIS CHEN CONT'D
What was his name again?
(Receives an answer from Liz)
Josh! You should talk to Skylar.
(Pointing at Skylar)
She’ll cast you tomorrow! Won’t you
Skylar?! Look at that face!
Josh simply continues smiling, and shakes his head slightly as he's stacking plates on his arm.
CHRIS CHEN
When does your shift end? You should come out with us and we can discuss your prospects. I bet you’re a good dancer!
Josh does not answer but asks the other women;
JOSH
Need anything else right now?
He gets scattered responses, ”uh-huh, no” ”thanks, we’re good” Josh turns to leave the table but stops by Lauren.
JOSH
You wanna come with me?
Lauren gets up and follows behind Josh through to the kitchen, Josh tells her to wait right outside and reappears without the dishes. He motions for her to follow him through a back door that leads to an outside loading dock. They’re alone outside as the door clicks shut.
LAUREN
Jeeeez! I’m so sorry Josh! Chris will go from being ”direct” to being downright rude and obnoxious right after her third drink...
JOSH
Lauren, it’s OK...
LAUREN
She’s not really my friend or anything, she’s just an old colleague of Liz’, I mean, women like that, they don’t have any boundaries, they think they can get away with behaviors that would
clearly be labelled as harassment
if they were male, I swear to God...
JOSH
(Interrupting)
Really, Lauren. I’ve been waiting tables for almost five years, my skin is so thick it’s practically impermeable. I couldn’t care less, trust me. What did you want to talk about?
LAUREN
(Hesitating)
I guess you’ve heard from Aidan...that my marital status has changed...
JOSH
He told me today actually, I'm so sorry...
LAUREN
No. No, it’s OK. Thing is...We’re selling the house and everything, and I will have...more funds at my disposal. I want you to know that we really could work something out...
JOSH
Oh Lauren.
(Touching her arm)
Really...as a matter of fact, I already had this type of offer only yesterday, from Francesca’s family, and I turned it down. I will not accept help from them, or you, or anyone. I am...so touched that you’re considering this... I mean...you’re amazing Lauren, but you should make a wiser investment, believe me...
The back door swings open and Josh’s older female colleague sticks her head through the door, she can only see Josh first, as Lauren is standing behind the door.
RACHEL
(British accent)
Havi’n a fag luv?
(Sees Lauren standing with him)
Oh! Hi there!
JOSH
Rach, this is Lauren.
RACHEL
Yeees, I’ve seen you around
(proffering her hand) nice to meet
you Lauren.
LAUREN
(Shaking her hand)
Likewise!
RACHEL
(Looking at Josh)
Right, I’ll pick up your station, don’t worry luv, take your time.
(smiling wryly)
JOSH
(As Rachel shuts the door)
Thanks Rach.
Lauren bursts out laughing and bends over giggling.
JOSH
Whaaat...?
LAUREN
(imitating Rachel’s accent)
”Havi’n a FAG, luuuv”
(giggling hysterically)
Josh laughs with her but looks a little puzzled.
LAUREN
(Calming down, wiping the
corners of her eyes)
Sorry! I’m a little drunk! Do you smoke?
JOSH
I do. Sometimes. Here, with Rachel.
To take the edge off, to shoot the
shit with her. She’s great. We
”take the mickey”(imitating British
accent) outta everything, guests,
management...
LAUREN
Yeeeah. I know what you mean, I’ve
worked in restaurants too you
know...
JOSH
I know. Listen...
(Josh looks at her softly and puts a hand on her shoulder)
I’m glad I know you, You’ve been
great to me (slight pause) but I
need to...solve my own problems...
LAUREN
I know how you’re feeling...
Josh and Lauren hug. For just a little longer than usual before Lauren pulls away.
LAUREN
I guess you should get back...
JOSH
Yeah. (Opens the door and holds it open for Lauren)
I’ll see you soon, right?
I’ll come by...get my shirt...
LAUREN
I washed it for you...
JOSH
(Putting his hand on her back)
Of course you did.
Back door clicks shut.

Scene E2:11
I/E. THE VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, WOODSIDE, CA - AFTERNOON
(CIRCA 2007)
Mitch and Lauren are walking side by side across the extensive lawn towards the tennis court behind the Van Bureen residence. Aidan (7 years old) is playing tennis with a private coach. As Aidan catches sight of his parents approaching the court he just drops his racket on the ground and rushes towards them. Lauren also starts to run and they meet in an embrace, then Lauren scoops him up and they’re spinning around, and around. Both of them are squealing with joy before they collapse on the grass and tumble around, holding each other tightly. Mitch waits for them to pull apart and he glances up towards the veranda where he sees his mother Katarina observing them. Finally it’s Mitch’s turn to hug his son and Lauren wipes the happy tears streaming down
her face, and brushes the grass off her clothes.
JUMP CUT TO:
I/E. THE VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, WOODSIDE, CA - VERANDA -
AFTERNOON (CIRCA 2007) - MOMENTS LATER
Lauren and Mitch are seated with Mitch’s parents, Katarina and Philip. The maid is serving them tea and coffee, and there’s a cake stand on the table.
LAUREN
(To the maid as she’s pouring her coffee)
Thank you so much Dalisa!
Katarina’s head remains turned towards the tennis court where Aidan is finishing his lesson. When she speaks, it’s not clear if she’s talking to herself or if she’s addressing Lauren and Mitch.
KATARINA
It’s stunning how much progress the
boy has made in just a week...
PHILIP
(to Mitch and Lauren)
He is highly adept...
KATARINA
Exactly like Peter was at that age.
Rather like a sponge. He’s going to go far, without a doubt.
PHILIP
He’s been with me in my study,
reading everything...his knowledge
of human anatomy is now on par with
a first year med student’s. It appears to me that he’s got photographic memory...
KATARINA
(To Lauren)
A child this gifted should not be wasting his time at a public
school. Why is he not attending
Stratford?
LAUREN
He’s very happy at his school. He’s
got a wonderful teacher and he’s
made great friends...
KATARINA
(As if she’s not really listening)
You have...
(Touching her own temple)
...something..white..here?
LAUREN
Ahh! That’s paint! I was painting
in our flip when Mitch picked me up
on our way up here this morning...
PHILIP
Oh, how’s that going?
MITCH
We’re about to find out now, as it’s going on the market next week.
Lauren has been working like a maniac helping the contractors finish it...
(Smiling at Lauren)
KATARINA
I thought you were going to finish your degree Lauren?
LAUREN
(Beaming)
I have! I got my BA diploma from UCLA yesterday! Finally!
PHILIP
Congratulations!
LAUREN
Thank you Philip! We really appreciate you taking care of Aidan when we’ve been so busy...
KATARINA
Why wouldn’t we? We’re his grandparents. And he’s an absolute
joy to have around...
LAUREN
(Beaming, proud)
He IS, isn’t he!?
KATARINA
(Looking at Mitch)
Children like him makes motherhood
rather effortless. Not all children are like that.
(Looking at Lauren)
Now you can go back to being a full-
time mother again...
LAUREN
(Laughs spontaneously)
Well I...
(Trails off as she sees Mitch shaking his head almost imperceptibly)
MITCH
(To his parents)
Aidan told us he’s going to Sweden?
KATARINA
Yes, you need to get him a passport.
Lauren’s mouth falls open and she’s staring at Mitch.
KATARINA
(Short sardonic laugh)
Oh, don’t worry. This will be next year, in June. We’ll be out on the Island...
MITCH
(Dryly)
OK. Thanks for informing us.
Katarina shows no reaction to Mitch’s comment as she’s turned her attention back to the tennis court.
KATARINA
Oh, they’re finished.
(To Philip)
I’ll go down and give him his gratuity...
Katarina gets up and hurries down across the lawn. Philip looks at Mitch and Lauren with a slightly apologetic smile.
PHILIP
I think you should consider joining us in Sweden next year...
LAUREN
(Glancing at Mitch)
Aidan won’t go anywhere without
me..without us...
MITCH
I agree. After three weeks with her
grandson, mamma’s already making
high-handed decisions about Aidan...
PHILIP
She’s VERY fond of the boy, we both
are. We have his best interest at heart and we want to provide him with opportunities. There’s such amazing potential in him...
(Pausing, contemplative)
We have created a trust for Aidan.
It will cover him all the way to his MD.
MITCH
His MD?
PHILIP
Yes.
MITCH
He’s 7 years old.
PHILIP
(Smiling patiently)
We know that.
MITCH
Right.
Lauren looks confused but says nothing. Mitch and Philip just turn to watch Katarina and Aidan walk up towards the veranda, hand in hand.
JUMP CUT TO:
I/E. THE VAN BUREEN RESIDENCE, WOODSIDE, CA, CIRCULAR
DRIVEWAY / MITCH VAN BUREEN’S CAR - AFTERNOON (CIRKA 2007)
Mitch is loading Aidan’s bags into the back of his SUV as Lauren and Aidan says goodbye to his grandparents. After giving Lauren a quick peck on the cheek, Katarina squats down in front of Aidan and touches his fringe lovingly.
KATARINA
Nana and Gramps will miss you terribly little man. We had so much fun together didn’t we?
Aidan nods dutifully.
KATARINA
You be a good boy now and keep up
the good work, like we talked about
OK?
More dutiful nodding.
Katarina seems to be losing her composure, she keeps a hand
on Aidan’s shoulder but looks down on the ground. Then she embraces him and says;
KATARINA
(Choked up)
Nan loves you very much...
Katarina rises up and takes a step back. She seems to be fighting tears. Mitch gives her a quick peck and they get into the car and drive away. Aidan waves at his grandmother through the car window and she’s waving back with a hand covering her mouth.
--
Mitch is driving out of Woodside. He’s observing his son in the backseat through the rearview mirror. Lauren also glances at Aidan over her shoulder, smiling contently. Aidan is already falling asleep after just a few minutes in the car. He looks peaceful and his head is beginning to slump forward.
Lauren looks sideways at Mitch. He keeps his eyes on the road but he looks pensive. Lauren puts her hand over his hand, resting by the transmission.
LAUREN
(Quietly, softly)
What are you thinking?
Mitch hesitates, seems to be conferring with himself, then he says;
MITCH
I just didn’t think she had it in her y’know...
Lauren keeps looking at Mitch, waiting for him to continue, but he doesn’t.
LAUREN
She seems very attached to him
now...
MITCH
Guess it’s never too late.
LAUREN
A lot of people in our parents’
generation didn’t know how to express love, but they still loved you...
Mitch is quiet for a long time, then he says;
MITCH
She never did. She never loved me.
Lauren looks very sad.
LAUREN
We love you. Me and Aidan, we love
you.
Mitch does not respond and keeps his eyes on the road, but he takes her hand and holds it tight.
