Scene E3:4
I/E. ED KENDALL’S HOUSE, TAMPA FL - DAY (CIRCA 2008)
Josh (9 years) is playing with his (half) twin sisters, MINDY and MOLLY in the backyard. There’s a swing set and a slide and the three year olds are running around in different directions, climbing on the slide and falling off the swings. Little Josh is trying his best to keep up with both of them but it’s a mission impossible. Suddenly one of the twin girls starts running towards the edge of the yard and Josh darts after her.
JOSH
(As he catches up with her and scoops her up in his arms)
No Mindy!!! You can’t run to the
creek!!!
There’s a high pitched scream coming from the slide. Josh looks alarmed and runs back to Molly carrying Mindy on his hip. Molly is on the ground by the slide with a wounded forehead, blood gushing down her face. Josh looks shocked as he drops Mindy and falls down on his knees by Molly. As he’s
holding the inconsolable toddler in his arms he’s shouting;
JOSH
Lori!!! LORI!!!!
The twin girl’s mother LORI comes rushing out through the screen door, alarmed and wide eyed.
LORI
(As she’s taking Molly from Josh)
What happened Josh?!!! You were
supposed to watch them!!!
Josh looks scared and ashamed as he takes a step back.
LORI
You listen to me now! There’s a first aid kit in the bathroom, on top of the cabinet, you need to get that for me ok?!
JOSH
(Insecure)
Should I go tell dad...?
LORI
(Irritated)
NO JOSH. Just get the kit ok!!!
And tissues!!!
Josh shoots off towards the house.

Scene E3:5
INT. ED KENDALL’S HOUSE, TAMPA FL - KITCHEN TABLE - DAY
(CIRCA 2008) - LATER
Josh and his twin sisters are at the kitchen table having a snack. Molly has a big bandage wrapped around her head but seems fine. She's dropping food on the floor to provoke a reaction from Josh, giggling when he jokingly scolds her. Lori approaches the table and Josh stands up.
JOSH
(As if asking for permission)
I need to go to the bathroom...
LORI
(Looking sad and tired)
Of course Josh. Listen, it wasn’t your fault Molly hurt herself OK?
You’ve done a really good job helping me watch them.
Josh just stands there, looking at Lori.
LORI
OK?
JOSH
(Nodding)
OK...
--
Josh comes out from the bathroom. He’s heading back to the kitchen but halts and turns around in the corridor.
Tentatively he walks in the opposite direction until he reaches the door at the end. Josh hesitates but opens the
door carefully before entering the garage. It’s dark in there but there’s a small TV in the far back, and an old tattered couch facing it.
Josh can see his dad’s greasy head of hair from behind, and a cloud of smoke rising up in front of the flickering TV
showing a football game.
ED KENDALL
You need to go to the market Lori.
JOSH
(Careful)
It’s me dad.
Ed turns to Josh as he’s approaching the couch. He’s looking at him like he doesn’t recognize him at first. His mouth is slack and his eyes are glassy, he’s very drunk.
ED KENDALL
Oh it’s you. What do you want?
JOSH
(Plucking up his courage)
When are we....going to Disney World...?
ED KENDALL
(Shaking his head, repeating what he’s
heard, mockingly)
”When are we going to Disney World”?!
(Inhaling deeply)
You need to GIVE ME A BREAK.
(Slurring)
You just have NO IDEA son, NOOO
IDEA.
(Pouring the last drops of a Wild Turkey bottle into his cup)
Y’all have me working 12 hour days!
Hauling my ass all across the state, back and forth! Every fucki’n day! And it’s just never enough! NEVER ENOUGH. What does Janice do with all the money I’m giving her huh? Getting her fancy college education, sending you over here expecting me to pay for
everything?! To take you to Disney
World!
Ed trails off, takes a sip of bourbon and ashes his cigarette on the concrete floor.
JOSH
(Wide eyed, almost crying)
You told me you’d take me, before I
came here...that we’d go...just you and me...
ED KENDALL
(As if talking to himself, muttering)
Ah well...a lot of things don’t turn out like you expect them to...
Ed reaches for the remote and changes the channel, and without looking at Josh he says;
ED KENDALL
You need to let me rest son. And tell Lori to get me a 12-pack of Pabst.
Josh looks injured and deeply disappointed but walks away without a word.

Scene E3:7
INT. JEFF & JANICE’S CAR, SAN DIEGO, CA (CIRCA 2008) - NEXT
DAY
Josh is in the backseat of his stepfather’s car. Beside him is his younger half-brother Connor (age 3) and in front, his stepfather JEFF and his mother JANICE. They’re driving off
from San Diego airport, north on Hwy 5. Josh looks tired but happy and he’s entertaining his little brother with a toy
alligator, making his brother giggle.
JEFF
(To Janice)
He seems completely fine to me. I really think this was unnecessary.
A $400 fee to fly him home just 5 days earlier...
JANICE
They’re lying, Ed’s off the wagon. Josh told me...I should have known, I will never forgive myself for this...
JEFF
(Doubtful, slightly annoyed)
I don’t know...I think you’re just teaching him that it’s OK to give up at the slightest adversity. He’s never going to get to know his dad if he gets to come home every time he feels a little homesick...
JANICE
What are you saying Jeff? That I
shouldn’t believe him? Ed’s a drunk. Always was, always will be.
And I’m really sorry Josh had to
see that with his own eyes. That shouldn’t have happened.
Jeff is quiet for awhile and looks brooding, then he says in a lower voice;
JEFF
This was supposed to be our time, to be together as a family...
Janice looks appalled.
JANICE
I can’t believe you said that, Josh is right here. As a full member of our family.
Janice and Jeff both go quiet and look straight ahead with rigid expressions.
Josh has stopped playing with his brother, he’s just staring out of the side window, fixing his eyes in the distance with a subdued expression.

Scene E3:8
EXT. THE VAN BUREEN HOUSE, ENCINO - POOL AREA/GARDEN -
AFTERNOON (PRESENT DAY)
Josh and Aidan are half-lying in the the outdoor sofas by the pool. It’s sunny and warm and they have a large garden
umbrella to provide shade. They have books and computers spread out between them.
AIDAN
(To Josh)
How’re you feeling about the psych?
JOSH
The psych doesn't worry me at all. It’s the calculus that drives me nuts...
Josh trails off as he sees Lauren walking towards the pool. She stops by the edge of the pool and gives Josh a short wave, then she proceeds to pull her over-sized t-shirt over her head in one swift motion to reveal a black two-piece bathing suit underneath. She descends into the pool using the steps and starts swimming across it. Josh follows her with his gaze, somewhat absentmindedly. In turn, Aidan is
observing Josh. After a short moment, Aidan speaks;
AIDAN
Oh my God. Not AGAIN.
Josh is startled and turns to Aidan.
JOSH
(Puzzled)
Huh? What?
AIDAN
You’re having a crush on her, aren’t
you?!
JOSH
Who??
(Looking genuinely confused)
Your MOM?
AIDAN
You’re not the first one bro.
Remember Jack Rayner?
JOSH
That frat-boy? The short one?
AIDAN
Uh-huh. He had a MAJOR crush on
Lauren when we were freshmen. Kept
coming around like ALL the time, followed her around the house like a fucki’n puppy (laughs at the memory) Pathetic!
JOSH
(Smiling, amused)
Awww! Can’t blame him though,
(Lowering his voice a little, leaning towards Aidan)
She’s smoki’n hot. It’s just a simple fact.
AIDAN
(matter-of-factly)
I know. She is. But if you’re gonna start hankering for her...
JOSH
(Interrupting, laughing)
Get REAL. Relax!
Josh turns his gaze back to the pool where Lauren is getting out of the water and proceeds to shower in the pool shower.
JOSH
(In a lower voice)
Can’t help it if the view is nice...
(Fake-coughs the word *MILF*)
Aidan leans forward and smacks Josh across the head with a book, as Lauren walks towards them wrapping a towel around her.
JOSH
Aaooouuuchh! Chill the fuck down man!
LAUREN
What’s going on? Low blood sugar?
Aidan you play nice!
Lauren sits down in front of them as Josh rubs his head a little.
LAUREN
(Looking at Josh)
How are things with you?
JOSH
I’m good, and you?
LAUREN
All good thank you. Busy...
JOSH
Yeah I saw like a hundred moving boxes in the house...
LAUREN
Yeah, a hundred may be about right...listen I need to ask you guys to help me take down some fittings...I’m too short even with the tallest ladder...
AIDAN
Later?
LAUREN
Yeah, whenever.
JOSH
I’m moving too.
LAUREN
Really? You’re down by Culver somewhere right?
JOSH
Yeah...I’ve cancelled my lease
today. So need to look for a new
place pronto.
LAUREN
How come?
Josh is hesitating.
AIDAN
His neighbor’s a hooker.
Lauren looks at Josh, a bit shocked.
JOSH
Well either she’s a complete nympho, or, she’s a ”working girl”...
LAUREN
Oh my God, that’s so...TRAGIC.
(Pauses and looks concerned)
I feel nauseous just hearing about it...
JOSH
Yeah, well Francesca and I knocked on her door to give her information about
some ”Diversion Program” but she
got aggressive and shoved us away...it’s not just her, the whole building is a complete mental asylum...
LAUREN
Jeeez! Sounds awful!
JOSH
Yeah well I’m getting outta there...
LAUREN
(interrupting)
You can stay here! In the annex!
JOSH
Oh!...but you’re moving out?
LAUREN
Sure, but the Pennman's won’t get access until July 1st...if you’re desperate...?
JOSH
(Surprised, contemplating)
Wow! I....may take you up on that offer...
LAUREN
You can move in today if you like...
JOSH
What’s the rate...?
LAUREN
(slapping Josh playfully)
Don’t be stupid. Francesca can come
and stay too if she wants. As long as everything’s packed up at the end of this month...
JOSH
I just have like a few boxes that I’d need to bring...I ”travel light”
(smiles)
LAUREN
Francesca lives at home?
JOSH
Yeah, she’s with her family down in
Redondo... so...
LAUREN
...you’re not moving in with her...
JOSH
No.
LAUREN
Have you even seen the annex? I usually have guests...
JOSH
No, never been in there actually...
AIDAN
(Grinning)
”The bathroom is bigger than the "Blue Banana”, that’s what mom always says...
JOSH
(confused)
Uhhh....?
LAUREN
(Laughing at Josh)
That reference is so lost on you huh? You babies...well, I’ll show it to you now, or later...
AIDAN
We need to crush this shit now.
LAUREN
Crush it baby. We’ll be grilling hamburgers in a few hours, the Cardenas are coming over...
AIDAN
Sounds awesome mom.
JOSH
Thanks Lauren.
Lauren leaves the guys and walk into the house to continue her packing.

Scene E3:11
I/E. BUNGALOW ON POMONA AVENUE, BELMONT SHORE, LONG BEACH, LA - AFTERNOON - DAYS LATER
Lauren is inside of her new house, the small bungalow in Belmont Shore. She’s gathering up cardboard packaging in the front room when there are several knocks on the door in fast
succession. Lauren smiles to herself and opens the door.
Right outside stands Liz, carrying a tray with Starbucks mugs and a paper bag, with little Ruth beside her.
LAUREN
Welcome home!
LIZ
Hiiii!!!
(Kissing Lauren on the cheek)
Ruth topples over Lauren who catches her in a tight embrace, lifts her off the ground and covers her with kisses.
LAUREN
Auntie Lauren is so glad you could come!
LIZ
(Looking around)
Woooow!!!! You are not wasting ANY
time! Looks like you’re ready to move in today!?
LAUREN
Well, not today, but very soon.
Diego’s guys painted the bedroom
wall yesterday... and I’ve been here cleaning and receiving deliveries from IKEA and C&B all day...
LIZ
It hadn’t been cleaned?
LAUREN
The seller's cleaners hadn’t done
a good job...
LIZ
Not by your standards I’m sure...
RUTH
Look mommy! I’m building a house!
Ruth has found all the cardboard packaging on the floor and has begun to build herself a little hut with it.
Liz and Lauren move to the kitchen and Liz sits down at the small breakfast table and begins to sip her coffee, she’s thinking about something.
LIZ
Nick has this friend...
LAUREN
Uh-huh?
LIZ
You’ve met him, at our 4:th July last year...
LAUREN
Who...? The bald guy...?
LIZ
Yeeeeaaah. Patrick. He’s super-nice. He’s in property development financing...
LAUREN
OK, but I don’t need financing...
Liz gives up a patient smile.
LIZ
He’s actually a widower...
LAUREN
Sorry to hear that.
Lauren waits for Liz to continue but only gets a knowing look.
LAUREN
Noooo. Please. You’re not trying to...?
LIZ
(Interrupting)
You should meet him! Just a harmless meeting! It would be like using training wheels! We’re thinking he’s gonna be swept off the market real soon...
LAUREN
”THE MARKET”...! Am I ”on the
MARKET”? Is that what I am now?
God, I hadn’t realized...
(Touching her temple, shaking her head in disbelief)
LIZ
I know you don’t feel ready for this but....I think you should maybe try to...get into a frame of mind where you can be open to new....opportunities...?
LAUREN
But I am wide open. Believe me. Not
just to bald, middle-aged widowers...
LIZ
(Interrupting)
THAT is exactly what is starting to
worry me. Is there something going on between you and Josh?
LAUREN
(Staring at Liz)
Are you SERIOUS?! You have such a
vivid imagination!
LIZ
Oh yeah? Am I imagining the way he
looks at you?
LAUREN
Totally. We’re just good friends, that’s...
LIZ
(Interrupting)
Well here’s the thing, Lauren.
You’re young at heart, and you look like you’re about 30, but, you’re NOT. You’re 44. And 44-year old women are not usually just ’good friends’ with 22-year old guys, especially not straight ones, so...
LAUREN
That’s massively stereotypical
coming from you! And you don’t know
him like I do...
LIZ
What exactly is there that I don’t know about him?
LAUREN
Josh is a great guy, a real decent human being. He’s struggled in life.
He hasn’t had it easy...
LIZ
(Interrupting)
I know. But what is he to you? A project? Or are you attracted to him?
There’s a pause where Lauren fixes her eyes on Ruth in the background and exhales.
LAUREN
All right. If I was 20 years old I’d like totally fall for him, of course...
LIZ
OF COURSE. He’s fucking gorgeous.
LAUREN
(Looking entranced)
Amazingly gorgeous, that hair...and the way he smiles...
LIZ
(Interrupting)
No no no no no no!!!! Stop it RIGHT
THERE. You’re in dangerous territory sis! Back away. Back away NOW.
LAUREN
Liz! There is no ”territory”! There is just a.....spiritual connection? 100 per cent platonic.
Liz looks skeptical.
LAUREN
C’mon he’s a baby!
LIZ
That’s what I’m saying!
LAUREN
With an old soul...
Liz raises her brow.
LIZ
Most importantly - he’s Aidan’s best friend!
LAUREN
Absolutely! And - he’s got a girlfriend!

Scene E3:14
INT. RESTAURANT, WEST HOLLYWOOD - DAY (CIRCA 2003)
Lauren (24) is seated at a restaurant with Aidan (3) and
Mitch’s senior colleague, realtor MARCUS (late 40’s).
AIDAN
Cookie! I want cookie!
Lauren signals to a waitress who comes up to the table.
LAUREN
(To the waitress)
Hi, do you have any type of cookies?
WAITRESS
No. I’m sorry. We only have desserts. We have a brownie and an apple tart...
LAUREN
We’ll have the Brownie, thank you.
The waitress disappears and Lauren turns to Marcus, who looks annoyed, with a forced, forgiving smile.
LAUREN
Once he’ll get some sugar, he’ll
calm down!
MARCUS
I think it’s better if we meet up
again...just the two of us, don’t you
think?
LAUREN
Sure...I really, really appreciate
you meeting up with me. I have SO many questions...
MARCUS
You’re right to come to me for
advice and support. There are plenty of pitfalls in the ”Flip” business, and I’d hate to see you fall into these...and...I’d like to get to know you Lauren. I have a feeling we can be great friends.
(Piercing stare)
Lauren just nods, and smiles, hesitantly, while giving her phone to Aidan for him to play with.
MARCUS
I can tell you’re the type of woman
that’ll go that extra mile, to get what you want. What you need. Am I right?
(Suggestive smile)
LAUREN
I guess...I’m prepared to work hard...
MARCUS
I really hope Mitch can see what an
amazing wife he has. He’s struggling to be honest. You know that don’t you? The other agents thought he’d get special treatment from Tom, but he isn’t. He’s still last in the pecking order, getting the left-overs.
Lauren keeps nodding, looking sad.
MARCUS
I’m the type of guy that will go out of my way to help a friend. A close friend. A loyal friend. Someone who cares for me. Y’understand?
Lauren keeps looking at Marcus, her eyes widening, trying to de-code what he’s saying.
MARCUS
If you go into the ”Flip” business
unsupported and inexperienced you
will fail. You’re gonna need someone to hold your hand. (Knowing look)
LAUREN
I believe you. That’s why it’s so great that you can put me in touch with the right people, and contractors...
Lauren is interrupted by the waitress putting a dessert plate in front of Aidan.
MARCUS
(To the waitress)
Check please.
(To Lauren)
I think we need more time together.
Undisturbed. We have so much to talk about. We could really connect...Can you get a sitter for, say, Thursday, noon?
LAUREN
I think so...
MARCUS
How bout the Sunset Plaza?
Lauren swallows and smiles amicably.
LAUREN
Sounds good. I think we should meet
up at your flip, and then go back there...?
Marcus hesitates, looks a bit annoyed, but agrees.
MARCUS
All right Lauren. Let’s do that.
(Rising up) I’ll text you the address.
Marcus puts cash on the table and quickly ruffles Aidan’s hair. He then bends forward and kisses Lauren’s cheek while caressing her shoulder.
MARCUS
(Eyes glowing)
I look forward to it...
LAUREN
(Beaming)
Me too!
Marcus leaves and Lauren’s expression changes dramatically.
She looks murderous and mutters to herself, quietly;
LAUREN
Fat chance you fucki’n sleazeball.
She turns back to Aidan and smiles at him while wiping his chocolate smeared mouth.

INT. THE VAN BUREEN HOUSE, ENCINO - KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM- LATER IN THE EVENING
Lauren shuts the door on the dishwasher and it starts. She glances out of the window and sees Aidan and Josh playing with Ruth. She’s chasing them around on the grass, and they take turns to pretend to be caught by her. It’s getting dark. A smile plays across Lauren's lips. She’s interrupted by a buzzing sound from her phone lying on the counter. She picks it up to read the message. It’s from Skylar;
Skylar: ”Call me if you need to talk” *heart emoji + sad face with tear*
Lauren looks puzzled and types back: ”I’m doing great thanks, what’s happening?”
Lauren sees the dots appear on the screen, then they disappear, only to reappear, over and over. Finally a message comes back;
Skylar: ”Don’t tell me I’m the first one to tell you...please?”
Lauren: ”What?!? Tell me!"
There’s a pause, and then an Instagram link appears. Lauren clicks on it and a photo fills her screen.
It’s a self-taken photo of Mitch and Ashley holding a small dog between them, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, glowing in the sunset. Ashley is clearly displaying her left hand holding the dog, and she’s wearing a ring with a generous diamond. They are beaming towards the camera, all white teeth and shiny hair.
The caption reads: ”I said yes”. It’s posted on Ashley’s account.
The posting already has 246 likes, and more than 80 comments.
Lauren feels a small wave of nausea rise up in her throat. It feels unexpected. She startles as Josh suddenly appears at the back door, holding two empty beer bottles, he looks at her and instantly realizes something’s off with her.
JOSH
(Putting the empty bottles on the counter)
You’re OK Lauren?
(concerned)
LAUREN
...eh, yeah. Yeah! I’m OK.
(Unable to hide that she’s a bit shaken)
Josh studies her for a second, and then says;
JOSH
Well...I thought I’d be done
freeloading here for the day (Smiling)
And I better head back to the nut- house, plug in my earplugs and...
LAUREN (Interrupting)
But you haven’t seen the annex yet? I can just show you now real quick...
